Skills You Need to Be Successful in College

College Professors & Staff expect their students to have the following skills:

  • Self-advocacy

  • Strong study skills and executive functioning skills

  • Independent, self-determined learner

    • you possess the skills & knowledge to help you make decisions and plan for your future​

  • Self-management/self-regulation​

  • Good communication skills (need to be able to communicate your needs)

  • Social skills (if you live on campus, you'll need to be able to get along with a roommate)

  • Independent Living Skills (you need to be able to take care of your daily needs - meal plan, budgeting/financial planning, hygiene, personal safety, laundry, leisure)

  • Community engagement (know how to navigate around your community)

  • Career awareness/pre-vocational skills
